We Danced in Derby by Roger Smith

Dancing is a fundamental and most joyous part of human nature. Teenagers of all generations have used dance to express their new found freedom, their identity and to find friends and partners. In terms of popular culture, the 1960s was perhaps the most exciting, fast-moving, and interesting decade of our time. Young people had put the austerity of the 50s behind them and were subject to a massive change in popular culture that embodied music, fashion, and sexual freedom. The place where teenagers celebrated this sea change was usually on the dance floor and venues multiplied throughout the nation. We Danced in Derby chronicles all the main dance halls, clubs, Discos and pubs in 1960s Derby. It also shares the happy memories of some of the people who frequented them – the dances they did, the music they danced to and even the clothes they wore.
