About the artist
Alfred John Keene was born in 1864 and was the fourth son of the locally-regarded Victorian photographer Richard Keene. Alfred was a pupil at the Derby Central School of Art between 1878 and 1885 and also worked briefly at the Crown Derby Works. Alfred lived – alongside his wife Annie – at 171 Abbey Street for many years, later moving to 25a Friar Gate and ultimately to 99 Uttoxeter New Road. Alfred died in 1930.
