About the artist
Ernest Townsend was born in Derby in 1880 and started an apprenticeship as an architect at an early age. Elected a member of the Derby Sketching Club in 1898, he eventually left Derby and his architectural career for a full-time course at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art and in 1902 he gained a place at the Royal Academy Schools. In 1907 he returned to Derby and became a professional painter. He is regarded as a local hero in Derby due to his work in camouflaging the Rolls-Royce works to protect them from the German bombers in World War Two. Ernest died in 1944.
